For four years, filmmaker Ireen van Ditshuyzen followed four people from Amsterdam who had come down with dementia. These four partook in the Amstel project, a long?term and large?scale investigation of four thousand elderly people, with a view to be able to diagnose dementia as timely as possible. The documentary shows the consequences, particularly of Alzheimer's disease ? one form of dementia ?, for patients and their immediate environment: forgetfulness, followed by painful confusion, and eventually mental deterioration. In addition, the film examines the medical aspects of dementia, emphasizing the importance of an early diagnosis. Van Ditshuyzen wants to present a truthful idea, without crossing ethical boundaries. I have always kept in mind that the images should not be degrading."
