Festival history
This documentary captures the human organ market from two angles. On one side, we see a Canadian woman who has a renal disease and must drain her kidney daily. She has money, but it's not helping her get a new kidney. On the other side, we see a penniless woman in India who is considering selling one of her kidneys. She is up to her ears in debt and sees it as the perfect way out. The organ market is anything but ethical, but isn't this a simple win-win situation? In the United States, someone dies every day waiting for a new kidney; in India, many more die of hunger. \i The Market\i0 follows the Canadian woman on her visit to India. She wants to find out for herself how it works and speak to the woman who is going to sell her kidney to her. This turns out to be a decisive encounter, because two other women who have sold a kidney are also present. They explain what their life has been like since. They are as poor as they ever were, but now they suffer from pain and exhaustion. It also emerges that the doctors pocket far more money than the donors do. \i The Market\i0 demonstrates that the West is all too eager to ease its conscience with a concocted excuse.
