Festival history

It is generally asserted that capitalism has triumphed. The capitalist economic system is racing around the world in a flush of victory. But is this contentment appropriate? In search of an answer to this question, director Raoul Peck made a trip to his native Haiti, where there is not much cause for celebration. Misery is the status quo for most Haitians. There is a gaping chasm of inequality between the majority that has nothing and a small group of rich people. Peck confronts the spectator with the question of whether this is a victory. He lays bare several weak points of capitalism by combining economic analyses and propositions with scenes from life in the fishing village of Port-à-Piment. Peck is pessimistic about the outcome of the confrontation between theory and reality. After all, what has happened to solidarity?
