Festival history
"Litter" means a group of mammals born to a single mother, but it can also mean waste disposed in the wrong place by reckless human action. The two definitions come close in this film. Accompanied by a dog and a herd of malnourished sheep, a man in an electric wheelchair crosses the delta towards a limitless horizon. He looks like the first and the last human being on earth. The overwhelming presence of nature turns the characters into simple figures trapped in a threatening and vast space. This is the place where the man meets his own primitive nature. In the background, we hear the sounds of a farm. Although the man is paralysed from the waist down, he is clearly the boss here. Some of the newborn puppies have to be put down, but that's no easy task from the chair, so he orders others to do it. In just six prolonged shots and without music, commentary or interviews, director Oscar Pérez captures the bitter soul of the man who just might be the only wheelchair-bound shepherd on earth.
