Abbas Kiarostami is capable of making an image. A short time ago I saw WHERE IS THE HOUSE OF MY FRIEND? and in their purity and exact relationship with the location, the topography that is revealed piece by piece, the pictures made me sing. Kiarostami makes a radical choice for children, without explicitly choosing against grown-ups. For this programme, I have selected AND LIFE GOES ON because in this film the play with "real" and "unreal" is pushed through to staggering vistas. Something like: (["real"]) <> (["unreal"]) should be written to designate the terms of the game. But in the meantime it is all damn real. Johan van der Keuken
