    Logline

In July 2012, the Vietnamese Communist government made an announcement - they were considering whether to allow same-sex couples to marry – becoming the first Asian country to do so. This was particularly shocking in a country where being gay was once labelled a “social evil” alongside drug addiction and resulted in jail sentences and cane whippings. “The Betel Begins the Conversation” is a feature length documentary that follows the potential legalization of same-sex marriage in Vietnam through the lives of several LGBT Vietnamese and their families.
