About IDFA 

The International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA, 1988) has grown into an international documentary institute that guides, inspires, and takes a stance. IDFA consists of a (public) festival, a fund, two markets, a theater pavilion, a new media, talent and educational program, and an online platform. An institute that serves audiences, professionals, and students and that selects based on artistic quality of documentary films and projects alongside urgency and accessibility, where inclusion and gender equality are important principles and where extra attention is given to talent development, new media, and diversity in all areas. IDFA has an open, informal, and collaboration-oriented culture. Work is carried out with a passion for documentaries and social engagement. At IDFA we believe in the power of a diverse team. 


Organization and Finances 

The IDFA Foundation forms a personal union with the IDFA Bertha Fund Foundation. IDFA has a collegial board consisting of a managing director-board member and an artistic director-board member. The IDFA Bertha Fund Foundation has a director-board member. 

IDFA's annual budget is approximately €8 million. Funding consists of a mix of subsidies, funds, sponsors, friends, and income from the festival. IDFA has ANBI status and is included in the BIS (basic infrastructure). 

IDFA is housed in Het Documentaire Paviljoen in Vondelpark, with among other things a hall for film screenings and a public space for various purposes that offer the possibility of year-round programming and a meeting place for everyone who holds IDFA dear. 

IDFA has an active works council. 


The Supervisory Board 

IDFA's Supervisory Board is the supervising, controlling, and advisory highest body of the IDFA Foundation and IDFA Bertha Fund Foundation. The Supervisory Board exercises supervision in a stimulating and critical manner and takes its responsibility as employer. 

The Supervisory Board consists of a minimum of three and a maximum of seven natural persons. Members are appointed for a period of four years; a retiring member can be reappointed once. 

The Supervisory Board focuses on strategically essential topics and concentrates on main lines and policy. 

The Supervisory Board shows visible involvement with the organization and its stakeholders. It actively collects information and is transparent to the outside world. 

The Supervisory Board makes an actual contribution to the execution of the mission and objectives of the organization through its level, knowledge, experience, contacts, and actions. 

The Supervisory Board meets at least four times annually and otherwise as often as it considers useful or necessary. 

IDFA invites members of the Supervisory Board to actively participate in the various activities and the organization. 

IDFA works according to the principles of the Cultural Governance Code. In accordance with its own social vision and the Diversity and Inclusion Code, the desired diversity in background, experience, gender identity, culture, and age is taken into account in the composition of the Supervisory Board, and efforts are made to achieve the most diverse team possible. The composition of the Supervisory Board is a combination of supervisors with experience in different fields and sectors of society. 


General Requirements for all Members of the Supervisory Board 

  • Able to contribute critically and independently to decision-making within the Supervisory Board and have no conflicting interests. 
  • Have broad social interest and affinity with the mission, field of work, and ambition of the foundations. 
  • Possess good insight into social and political relations. 
  • Know the cultural field and have affinity with art and culture in general and passion for film and documentary in particular. 
  • Are willing to serve on committees (strategy, audit, remuneration) within the foundations. 
  • Possess a broad network and are willing to deploy this network for the benefit of the foundations. 
  • Are able, also in terms of available time, to monitor the implementation of policy and follow the general affairs within the foundations and actively and critically assist the board with advice. 
  • Are willing and able to attend Supervisory Board meetings and prepare for them. 


Profile Supervisory Board Member – Creative 

We are looking for a member with a distinct creative, artistic perspective who has experience in the cultural or creative sector. The new creative member of the Supervisory Board does not come from a traditional business or corporate environment, but is someone with experience in film or the arts in general. A candidate with, in addition to an impressive artistic substantive profile, the necessary experience as director/supervisor. 

Able to invest time and attention in IDFA/IBF and is approachable for the artistic director/board member of IDFA and the director of IBF to discuss artistic policy. Preferably we will attract a new member with a culturally diverse background and perspective. 

The new member of the Supervisory Board has a good (inter)national reputation and an interesting complementary (inter)national network. Is willing to unlock this network to introduce IDFA to new partners, cultural institutions, financiers, and press. 

IDFA and the Supervisory Board value the independence of its supervisors. We invite interested candidates who have or had formal ties with IDFA (or its partners) to explore the possibilities with us. In a potential meeting, we will discuss any potential conflicts of interest.

Procedure 

This profile will be used in the selection of the new member for the Supervisory Board. The selection committee consists of a delegation from the Supervisory Board and executive board/management. The vacancy will be published on the organization's website, among other places. Active recruitment will also take place in the network to alert candidates to the vacancy. The Supervisory Board invites candidates to respond to the vacancy.
