Speak White

Pierre Falardeau, Julien Poulin
Canada
1981
Festival history

The poem was recited by Michèle Lalonde in 1970 during a dedication to poetry in Montreal. Ten years later Falardeau and Poulin decided to make a film about it.
The poem expresses anger felt by victims of discrimination and oppression meted out by the so called superior cultures. The film is a collage of scenes relating to wealth, occupation, violence and racism, and the story slowly unfolds through the use of texts accompanied by provocative sounds.
