Together with Bar Bario, IDFA Meets presents a two-part interdisciplinary evening with film and performance, kicking off with the screening of We Come in Peace, They Said by filmmaker and film theorist Jyoti Mistry.
In this poetic archival trilogy, Mistry explores how race, gender, and sexuality are shaped by structures of violence and power. Using colonial archives, travelogues, and amateur films, she constructs layered, visceral works that interrogate the racialization of Black masculinity, intersectional sexism, and queer identity. With voice, image, and animation, Mistry opens up space for reflection and resistance—challenging the visual and linguistic codes that continue to marginalize. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, moderated by Shaquille Shaniqua Joy.
Next, we will walk up to Bar Bario (around 10 minutes) for the latter part of the evening. Here we will be treated to a live performance by Ochtenddauw, a visceral duet exploring the transformative power of anger, performed by saxophonist Diana Dzhabbar and dancer Vainergill Thurnim. The duo invites the audience into a charged space where rage sheds its destructive connotation and becomes a force for renewal. This intimate performance is a journey through the emotional depths of anger—not to tame it, but to recognize its power as a catalyst for healing.
