Festival history
Çoskun is the eldest son of a family that lives in a remote small village in eastern Anatolia. This film tells the story of this family and the adversity they met with, when they received the news of Çoskun’s apprehension on charges of political activism nine years ago. Çoskun’s father and mother and his younger sister tell their story. The sister reads from the letters her brother sent home during the nine years of his detention. These years have obviously taken a heavy toll from all members of the family. The father is embittered; he had taken great pains to guarantee his children a better future, but with Çoskun’s arrest this dream was permanently shattered. Mother is primarily sad about the absence of her eldest child. And the sister missed her opportunity to also receive training in the city. She decided to stay in the village when her father confessed to her he would not be able to bear a second child abandoning him. The images show the family members at their daily activities inside the house and outside, tending the sheep in the vast landscape. Then, Çoskun returns home and the family is reunited. For Çoskun, too, life has lost a lot of its promise. And all this just because as a young, second-year student he was not allowed to speak his mind…
