Taxis in Soweto are not luxury cars, but minibuses that can seat fifteen to twenty passengers. Every driver is a member of a taxi association, and the eleven taxi associations in Soweto compete with each other in such a way that a veritable taxi war is raging, claiming new victims every day. The three main characters of TAXI WARS are Sipho Mtambo, the most powerful taxi boss in Soweto, Thapelo Motaung, a taxi driver, and Andries Kwenaite, a former taxi owner who became the victim of the extremely violent cutthroat competition. The heavily armed taxi bosses, who in addition are protected by so-called ‘hitmen’, have accumulated so much power in Soweto that the police can do nothing but stand by impotently.
