Festival history
In the tropical rain forest in the interior of Borneo a couple of thousands of Penan make up the last nomadic tribe on the island. They do not have money or chronometers like clocks or watches. TONG TANA depicts the Penan's natural way of life, with the filmmakers being guided by Swiss Bruno Manser who has been living with this community for five years. The biggest threat to the Penan is the disappearance of their natural habitat. When the filmmakers were shooting their documentary, half of the tropical rain forest of Borneo had already been lumbered. Expectations are that the other half will be felled within ten years time. Bruno Manser leads the Penan in their struggle against the large-scale timber trade, which is why he is on a war footing with the authorities.
