Marlene Dumas is one of the most prominent contemporary artists. She was born and raised in South Africa and has worked and lived in the Netherlands since 1976. In her life-size paintings she depicts human figures who are struggling with emotions like homesickness, nostalgia, anger and grief. In MISS INTERPRETED (MARLENE DUMAS) the artist is followed for six months. The main narrative line is made up by the preparations she makes for an exhibition in Japan. Still, the film has not merely become a portrait of an artist, or a biography. On the basis of archive footage, video footage, paintings and drawings, all edited in an associative way, an image is presented of a woman living on the fracture zone of politics and history.
