Festival history
At first sight, Nadia and Dennis seem to be ill matched. Dennis is a big, sturdy guy with long hair; Nadia is half as tall and walks on crutches; she suffers from spina bifida. But they are in love and want to get married. This does not happen without a struggle. Nadia is horrified to notice that Dennis treats his car like a woman, and it makes Dennis desperate that Nadia is driving up the expenses for the wedding. In this film - that can not be classified as one specific genre - Nadia and Dennis play themselves, making moments visible that would otherwise be hidden to the camera, like an unexpected proposal in the car. With romance and humour, but also with all the doubts pertaining to marriage. The star parts are played by Nadia‘s parents. When her father says he is not sure whether Dennis is the right man for Nadia, her mother answers: ‘Did I look for another one when my mother told me that you were no good?‘ In 1977, director Beverly Schaffer already made a short documentary about Nadia, then nine years old, which won her an Academy Award.
