A portrait of the chequered life and career of the popular and controversial jazz clarinettist and big band leader Artie Shaw, who was 74 at the time of shooting. When he was 29 years old he was a symbol of the American 'succes story', only to let go a career of millions in 1939. He gathered fame and wealth but never gave in to the temptations of success. "While a quarter of a million will buy a lot of things, it won't buy the energy you blew out making it." The main focus of this film is on the artist who has to keep his ground in his life and music. "It is easy to love those who are unique and die young, but is it hard to love those who have the courage to be different and who fight to stay different."
