Edna's Day

Edna sits at the back of the class. She and her fellow Bosnian Negra are trying to get the hang of German, the language of their new homeland, and for Edna it's no easy task. What's more, the situation seems a little odd, because while the other children have normal lessons together, Edna and Negra are at the back, plodding their way through a German-language textbook. They do not mind the camera, and Edna in particular actually seeks contact with it. In one-on-one conversations with the interviewer, her classmates share their thoughts about Edna. Question: "Does anybody in the class know what Edna's feeling?" Answer: "Don't think so." Question: "Would you like to know?" Answer: "Not really." This is not very encouraging for Edna's prospects, but the bold little girl with jaunty pigtails is not going to be put off that easily. She dances in the hallway and stands up for herself in the schoolyard.
