Festival history
'In our dreams we see everything. The clouds. The stars. The green fields. But then we wake up. Oh God.' The three women who eke out a living by singing and begging in Camina Grande, Brazil, have been blind from birth. The title A pessoa é para o que nasce is the Brazilian way of saying 'If you are born poor, you will remain poor all your life'. The three utter this proverb in a resigned way, though they admit it would be nice if somebody would take care of them. Roberto Berliner directs documentaries and video clips, and his short film A pessoa é para o que nasce as a clip with a sequence of the splendour the blind women get to see in their dreams. The conversation that follows testifies to their joy in singing, their childlike rapture when they notice that the light is switched on and off, and their resignation to the fact that those who are born poor will simply remain poor all their lives.
