In Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s most conservative states, a local newspaper is run by women from the lowest caste, the Dalits. This is quite extraordinary in a country where journalists are among the elite. The camera follows the reporters as the newspaper transitions from print to digital. They are introduced to smartphones and learn how to film for their steadily growing YouTube channel.

With inspiring grit, the reporters interview victims of systemic rape, but equally they produce stories about lack of sanitation, bad roads, or a hidden scandal about an illegal mine. The women proudly explain how the authorities are finally taking action—often after attempted intimidation or bribery, which we see taking place openly.

Through their work, which often comes under criticism from their husbands or family, the women begin to question the conventions of the society in which they live. Their story contains a hopeful plea for courage and independent thinking.
