Last Sunday, during the Academy Awards, the powerful documentary film '20 Days in Mariupol' by AP journalist Mstyslav Chernov won an Oscar for Best Documentary. The film had already garnered acclaim during IDFA 2023, where it won the NPO Audience Award.

The film provides an unflinching account of the cruel Russian invasion of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Chernov and his team managed to transmit the shocking and now iconic footage from the city, deprived of internet and electricity, with great difficulty. Despite the bombardments, the footage is shaky but crystal clear. In a soft-spoken voice-over, Chernov provides commentary on his emotions during the twenty days that transformed this ordinary city into a devastated ruin.

Although it has been available on 2Doc and NPO2 for a short time, the broadcaster has now made the documentary available for longer viewing on NPO Start and via the 2Doc website. We highly recommend watching it.
