Four Comrades, One Echo
Artistic Research Week 2025 | Master of Film | Part of the Keep an Eye Filmacademie Festival
In the sweltering summer in a small town in southeastern China, four sisters reunite, brought together by the daughter they raised collectively. As they imagine alternate lives for one another, their fantasies evolve into a shared story-writing process. Fiction gives them space to voice unspoken desires, anger, and joy. Their imagined selves begin to blur with their real ones. Tender husbands, unfulfilled dreams, and unresolved resentments surface. Sisterhood, at once playful and painful, holds them together. A voice in Sichuan dialect threads through the film, telling fragmented stories of anonymous women and girls.A recurring propaganda melody, once political, becomes deeply personal. This film is a symphony of women’s voices, that connects the past and present, personal and political, reality and dreams, until they are no longer separate.
