The End of Photography

Festival history
consists of anonymously photographed houses in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Judy Fiskin holds an elegy for the end of photography. One by one, she mentions the elements that have disappeared: film, canisters, reels, developer, timer, safe-light, negative carrier, filters... It is not only about a farewell to the photochemical process, but also to an era in which every home had a dark room. This involved a do-it-yourself mentality: having total control over capturing your personal history. The fact that the people living in the photographed houses do not appear in the film must surely mean they are hidden in a stuffy, blacked-out hall closet, patiently waiting an image to appear on paper. For this year's IDFA, Fiskin had the film blown up from Super 8 to 35mm.
