Festival history
Alejandro Goic was 16, Enrique Paris 12 and Carolina Tohá 8 years old when general Pinochet seized power in Chile on 11 September 1973. On this occasion, Alejandro and Carolina lost their fathers, who were members of the Allende government. All three of them were student leaders during the tumultuous eighties, when the student movement revolted against the dictatorship. It was an intense period of contrasts, close ties and funerals. Next, a democratisation process took place and the movement disintegrated. Goic took to drinking, Carolina left for Italy, Paris ended up in business. Now, all three of them are politically active again. In VOLVER A VERNOS, these three people’s course of life is depicted against the background of the social developments in their fatherland. When Pinochet eventually stands down and 30 years after the coup a socialist (Ricardo Lagos) is elected president again, the circle is closed. Goic, Paris and Carolina, having children of their own now, recognise their parents in themselves. ‘We are them. And that’s how it is’, Alejandro Goic says. VOLVER A VERNOS is a pamphlet, containing archive footage, diary excerpts, family pictures, interviews, newspaper headlines and images of deserted streets, which link the personal and social elements and contrast the violence committed by the regime to the love that people are capable of.
