Festival history
Central characters in TROPICOS are a poor and young family with two small children. They move from the Brazilian countryside to the city in search of a job. The theme of this film recalls John Ford's THE GRAPES OF WRATH. In his first feature film, writer/director Gianni Amico applies a documentary style to complement his story with background information. He uses statistics on income and population figures in Brazil, and data on the history and economy of the country. Amico gives a poignant impression of the poverty and misery that, for the majority of the people, are involved in a neo-capitalistic system.
