Festival history
A girl from rural Russia wants to go to Moscow to become "popular." What is she prepared to give up in return? Everything, starting with her virginity. In this film, the well-known Russian director Vitaly Mansky follows several girls in the new Russia, a country becoming capitalist at a great pace. They quickly lose their virginity in the big city, all of them in different ways. One simply sells it, while another ends up on a reality show where she's forced to kiss one of the male contestants.
It's shocking to see how young people, men too, are prepared to give everything to "fit in," "break through," and "become famous." But particularly young women are victims of the new system, thinking they will get rich and famous by appearing in a porn movie.
The girl who used to wear pink all the time in her native village and dreamt of owning a pink car ends up working as a pole dancer in a strip club. When her grandmother used to urge her to get a good education, the girl disagreed with her, believing instead that many well-educated people fail in real life. After all, it comes down to guts and judgement of character, right? Selling yourself, using people, showing no mercy to others. In her mind, this is the recipe for success.
