behind the camera
BEHIND THE CAMERA, an essay film which is based on privat historical film material from the thirties. The film material comes from Rachel Rockstein, whose hobby was recording everyday life situations of her family with a 16mm movie camera. The unusual film material was sixty years hidden in a film can in the cellar. By watching everyday life of the Jewish family as well as privat events, like a picnic, a wedding and on holidays, one recognize the slow change of the political situation in Nazi-Germany .The subtle threat one sees with the eyes of the light-hearted young woman who wants to enjoy her youth, is not similar to the elder person writing about professional disqualification, obligation removal and exodus in her diary. The pictures are taken between 1927 and 1936.
